Corps of Cadets

The Corps of Cadets is a program offered at six colleges known as senior military colleges (SMCs). At some schools, the student population is 100-percent Corps, while at others, the Corps is part of a larger student body.

SMC Corps graduates are guaranteed an active duty commission. However, choosing to commission is not mandatory. If a cadet chooses to contract for a commission and receives a scholarship, the cadet is obligated to serve on active duty. Alternately, if a cadet chooses not to contract, they will have no military obligation after graduating.

Virginia is home to the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and the Virginia Military Institute.  Virginia Tech is a public university hosting a corps program as part of a larger civilian university.  Virginia Military Institute is a state military college and is comprised entirely of Corps of Cadet students.

Other schools offering Corps of Cadet programs include:

  • The Citadel: The Citadel is state-supported and 100-percent of undergrads are in the Corps.
  • Texas A&M: Texas A&M is a public university hosting a Corps program as part of a larger civilian university.
  • University of North Georgia: The University of North Georgia is a state military college that is 100-percent Corps and 100-percent Army.
  • Norwich University: Norwich University is a private military college that hosts a Corps of Cadets and a civilian student population.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets traces their history to the founding of Virginia Tech in 1872, but their experience is modern, agile, and unlike anything else offered on campus. The Corps of Cadets is a four-year, full-time leader development program focused on building teamwork, character, and problem-solving skills that make a difference in today's world.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The VMI academic program educates cadets in a rigorous environment that encourages lifelong learning and develops citizens of character who anticipate, respond, and lead in a complex and changing world. VMI offers cadets a challenging four-year core curriculum and 14 nationally recognized majors in engineering, the sciences, and the humanities, with an array of enrichment opportunities provided through the Institute Honors Program, undergraduate research, foreign study, internships, and the Institute Writing Program.
